Nvidia laptop manufacturers forced to open boxed systems to check for missing ROPS
Laptop makes forced to check RTX 50 systems for “Missing ROPs”
According to Hardware Canucks, three laptop manufacturers have confirmed that Nvidia’s “Missing ROPs” problem impacts RTX 50 series gaming laptops. Two of these manufacturers have reportedly confirmed that Nvidia is making them open “ready-to-ship” pallets of laptops to check for GPUs with “missing ROPs.”
So far, Nvidia’s “missing ROPs” issue has affected a small percentage of RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards. These missing ROPs result in lower performance levels in gaming workloads. Given this degradation in performance, Nvidia has promised replacement GPUs for users with affected graphics cards.
Nvidia’s “Missing ROPs” issue is a BIG problem for RTX 50 series laptops
Now, several sources have claimed that Nvidia’s “Missing ROPs” problem extends to their RTX 50-series laptops. This is a big problem for Nvidia. If this issue affects a discrete GPU, Nvidia only needs to replace a single graphics card. For laptops, Nvidia needs to replace the entire system, which is a much more expensive prospect. After all, Nvidia can’t simply switch out a laptop’s GPU with a fresh one. The entire laptop’s motherboard needs to be replaced.

What’s wrong? What do ROPs do?
ROPs are “Render Output Pipelines,” and they are a fundamental part of every modern GPU. They are specialised units that read and write pixel data information to and from a GPU’s frame buffer. They can also play a major role in pixel blending and anti-aliasing and other tasks. Simply put, they are an important part of any GPU, and having less of them can lower the gaming performance of any graphics card.
RTX 50 series GPUs that are affected by this ROPs issue deliver less overall gaming performance than their fully-enabled counterparts. While some games rely less on ROP performance than others, Nvidia claims this issue has an “average graphical performance impact of 4%.”
Will RTX 50 series laptops ship with missing ROPs?
Clearly, Nvidia is doing what it can to prevent laptops with missing ROPs from reaching customers. Even so, it is likely that an affected laptop will get a customer. If Nvidia is telling manufacturers to check their inventory, that means that there are laptops with sub-standard Nvidia GPUs. If any affected laptops are not caught by manufacturers, it will become a customer’s problem.
Nvidia has previously stated that the “production anomaly” that caused this issue has been “corrected.” This means that no newly produced RTX 50-series GPU silicon will be created/shipped with this defect.
