Nvidia reportedly created RTX 5090D graphics card for China

Nvidia has reportedly created another China-only graphics card, succeeding the RTX 4090D

Rumour has it that Nvidia has prepared a custom RTX 5090 graphics card for the Chinese market, once again skirting around US export restrictions. This GPU is the Nvidia RTX 5090D, which is reportedly launching in early 2025.

If the latest rumours are to be believed, Nvidia’s RTX 5090 graphics card is due to launching in late 2024. This GPU will utilise the company’s new Blackwell GPU architecture and reportedly features 28GB of GDDR7 memory. Since the RTX 5090 will be more powerful than Nvidia’s RTX 4090, the GPU will almost certainly be unavailable in China. Currently, it is unknown how Nvidia will keep their planned RTX 5090D within the US’ export restrictions without heavily downgrading the GPU’s specifications.

Nvidia’s next-generation D-series GPU will reportedly launch in China in January 2025. This lines up well with the Chinese New Year holidays, an ideal time to release a China-only product.

Nvidia is a publicly traded company. As such, they want to make as much money as possible for their shareholders. That means that Nvidia doesn’t want to leave the Chinese market behind. Money is money, regardless of who it comes from. What remains to be seen is whether or not the US will place tighter export restrictions on China to prevent the same of the RTX 5090D in China. After all, the US doesn’t want China to have access to high-end AI hardware. As such, they wouldn’t want a GPU that’s stronger than the RTX 4090D on the market.
