Nvidia starts using SK Hynix GDDR7 chips for its GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs

Could the introduction of SK Hynix GDDR7 memory help increase Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series supply?

Until now, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 50 series has shipped with GDDR7 memory from Samsung. Now, it looks like Nvidia has started using an alternative GDDR7 supplier, SK Hynix, as reported by MEGAsizeGPU on Twitter/X.

With the introduction of SK Hynix GDDR7 memory, there is a change that the world’s supply of GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs will improve. There were rumours that GDDR7 memory supply was limiting RTX 50 series graphics card production. If that is true, introducing a new GDDR7 supplier into the mix will surely improve matters.

Currently, it is unknown if there are any meaningful differences between Samsung and SK Hynix’s GDDR7 memory modules. There is a chance that one brand’s memory will run cooler than the others. Alternatively, one brand’s memory may be more overclockable than the others. Over time, these details will be figured out by overclockers and hardware enthusiasts.

For most users, having SK Hynix or Samsung memory in your graphics card will be an inconsequential difference. After all, these memory modules will operate at the same baseline speeds regardless of their manufacturer. Hopefully, the introduction of SK Hynix memory will help to increase GPU supply, and make high-end GPUs more affordable.
