Nvidia’s Geforce 397.31 driver is causing issues for some users

Over the past 24 hours, a large number of PC gamers have been reporting problems on Nvidia’s official forums regarding the company’s recently released Geforce 397.31 drivers.

This new graphics driver offers “Game Ready” improvements for both BattleTech and FrostPunk alongside support for RTX technology on Volta-powered GPUs. Now it looks like Nvidia’s latest driver is not as “Game Ready” as users expected, at least if you are a GTX 1060 user.

Judging from the reported issues on Nvidia’s forum, their Geforce 397.31 driver has a software conflict with certain GTX 1060 vbios files. Other users have stated that their Geforce Experience apps have attempted to install Nvidia’s latest driver update on Fermi-based systems, which are no longer supported by Nvidia’s “Game Ready” drivers.

Right now Nvidia GTX 1060 users should avoid updating to Nvidia’s Geforce 397.31 drivers and wait for an upcoming HotFix for the issue. Those who are affected by this issue should reboot their systems in safe mode and uninstall Nvidia’s Geforce 397.31 drivers using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).  After uninstalling users should reinstall Nvidia’s last stable driver release, version 391.35.

Nvidia’s GTX 1060 is one of the most popular graphics cards on Steam at the time of writing, making this issue a big deal for PC gamers, especially for those who want to play either BattleTech and Frostpunk with optimal performance. Let’s hope that Nvidia can address this issue quickly with a HotFix or new driver iteration.
