Oculus slashes the Rift’s price tag

Oculus has now slashed the price of their Rift VR headset, reducing the price of the headset by $100, the Touch controller kit by $100 and an extra camera kit by $20.

This lower the price of the Oculus Rift to $499 and the price of the Oculus Touch to $99.99, making the Oculus Rift almost $200 cheaper than the HTC Vive when bundled with Touch controllers.

Oculus’ VP of content, Jason Rubin, has stated that wireless VR is too expensive for the wider adoption of VR, and that Oculus plans to focus on reducing the price of VR in order to bring more gamers into the ecosystem.

Everybody wants wireless and I understand the upside of it, but it’s a question of trade-offs.

First of all, I think after watching hundreds of thousands of people go through demos all over the world, they all have an intention to buy VR. Like 95% say ‘I’m buying VR.’ The ones that don’t buy, the number one reason they don’t is because of price. For us that’s the most important thing to focus on right now – wireless adds cost.

Now the Oculus rift it a lot more price-competitive with the HTC Vive, though it does leave us to wonder if the HTC Vive has their own price decrease planned in the near future.
