RTX 4070 burnt to a crisp due to PSU failure

This “crispy” GPU can teach us all a lesson about PSU selection

In a recent video from DIY Repair Hour, a burnt Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU was shown that was damaged beyond repair. This graphics card reportedly caught fire after suffering from a “power connector issue”, according to Tom’s Hardware. However, the real damage was caused by the user’s power supply, which reportedly lacked overcurrent protection (OCP).

It has been reported that this user sourced their power supply from a “mining rig” and claims they only became aware of their GPU burning because of its “horrible smell”.

If there is a lesson to learn from this, it’s that PC builders should invest in a good power supply. A good power supply wouldn’t deliver enough power to do this kind of damage. The fire was so intense that most of this GPU’s power connector had been burned away. Only a few pins remain.

This burnt RTX 4070 GPU was sent to DIY Repair Hub so that working components could be salvaged. Obviously, this GPU was damaged beyond repair. However, this GPU’s die was said to be “healthy” at the end of the video. That said, we weren’t shown this GPU die working with another PCB, so consider that claim unconfirmed. Other supposedly working parts include several DRAM modules, some display ports, and several power stages. As damaged as this graphics card appears, some components were salvageable.
