Samsung set to showcase Micro LED TV at CES 2018
Samsung is rumoured to be showcasing a Micro LED TV at CES 2018
Both of these technologies have issues, with burn-in being common on OLED display when they show the same image over an extended period and QLED’s lack of a “pure black” given its reliance on a standard backlight with “local Dimming” technologies. Both QLED and OLED have their advantages, but it looks like Samsung has plans to replace both with MicroLED displays, which have the potential to offer benefits over both QLED and OLED.Â
At CES 2018, Samsung is rumoured to be showcasing a new 150-inch display with Micro LED technology, offering the potential to provide lower power consumption than OLED and the same ability to turn off individual LEDs while lacking OLED’s burn-in problems.Â
This technology was first showcased by Sony back in 2012 with their then called CLEDIS (Crystal LED Integrated Structure)Â 55-inch 1080p display, which acted as a demonstration product that was never intended for mass production.
In effect, Micro LED is a miniaturized version of the company’s recently released Cinema LED display, though the LEDs used here are built on a microscopic scale with each pixel being less than 100 micrometers in size.Â
One of the other key benefits of Micro LED technology is decreased display latencies when compared to standard LCDs, which combined with lower power operation delivers advantages to existing technologies in almost every tangible way.Â
Apple is also reportedly working on their own Micro LED technology with TSMC, though nothing has been announced from either company as of yet.Â
This new display technology is not expected to become common anytime soon, with initial offerings being expected to come with sky-high pricing due to the early state of this panel type.Â
