Back at CES 2020, Samsung revealed a crazy monitor, a screen which combined a 5120×1440 (dual-wide 1440p) screen with an ultra-fast 240Hz refresh rate. In basic terms, this is two 240Hz 1440p screens merged into one, offering users a 1000R curvature to make the screen ideal foroffice and gaming setups.

What’s so special about 1000R curved displays? Research suggests that it is the optimal level of display curvature for productivity, closely matching the peripheral vision of humans at standard desk-to-face distances. With a 1000R curvature, this monitor is designed to be 1000mm away from the user’s face, which is ideal for most desk or office setups.

On the high-end, Samsung’s new Odyssey G9 monitor delivers users a huge 49-inch 5120×1440 (dual-wide 1440p) screen with a DisplayHDR 1000 rating and support for refresh rates up to 240Hz. This screen also offers users a response time of 1ms, and supports AMD’s FreeSync 2 technology while also being G-Sync Compatible.

With such a high resolution and refresh rate, Samsung’s Odyssey G9 must utilise DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 to maintain the screen’s required bandwidth levels.

This screen uses a VA panel and uses QLED (Quantum Dot) technology to deliver VESA DisplayHDR1000 certified HDR support, a wide colour gamut of 95% DCI-P3 and 92% Adobe RGB coverage. This screen also supports full 10-bit colour depths and used edge-lit local dimming to deliver deeper blacks than standard PC monitors. While this isn’t an OLED screen, it’s definitely better than your average PC monitor.

Overclockers UK currently has this screen up for pre-order for £1,279.99, which is an incredibly high price, but reasonable given the specifications of this monitor. Retail availability is expected within the next few weeks.

Samsung promises 2ms of input lag with this monitor, support for Picture-in-Picture modes and inputs which include DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. This monitor is also fully compliant with VESA monitor arms, with the stock stand supporting swivel, tilt and height adjustment options.
