VESA launches DisplayHDR True Black 1000 and ClearMR 21000 specs for premium OLED monitors
VESA publishes higher quality tiers for their display standards thanks to the influx of high-quality OLED displays
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has released updated screen performance standards to encourage display manufacturers to create higher-quality TVs and monitors. These updates include higher tiers for the DisplayHDR True Black and ClearMR display standards, which rate HDR performance and motion clarity.
DisplayHDR True Black now has a new “1000” tier for OLED displays that can deliver higher luminance levels and colour accuracy than DisplayDHR True Black 600 displays. Note that DisplayHDR True Black is a different standard from DisplayHDR, as the True Black specification calls for deeper black levels that can only be achieved with per-pixel illumination technologies. Today, the only DisplayHDR True Black certified displays use OLED technology.
ClearMR now has three new performance tiers
VESA’s ClearMR standard is a relatively new quality metric. It measures motion performance, with higher ratings being better. Displays with higher ClearMR performance ratings deliver clearer pixels and sharper visuals when things are moving on-screen. This new update to the specification adds 15000, 18000, and 21000 ratings.
These new ratings allow buyers to differentiate between displays with great motion clarity characteristics and displays with the best motion clarity characteristics. This allows users to better judge the motion clarity of high refresh rate (480Hz) OLED displays.

These new display specifications from VESA are designed to push monitor manufacturers to deliver better monitors. The new DisplayHDR True Black specifications call for brighter, more colour-accurate OLED displays. Additionally, these new ClearMR standards call for displays that deliver clearer images. Both changes are great for gamers. This is especially true for ClearMR, as improved motion response is great for fast-paced gaming applications.
