XCOM 2 will have mods available to play from day one

XCOM 2 will have mods available to play from day one, with several mods coming from the developers of the “Long War” mod from XCOM.

Firaxis has been working with the newly formed “Long War Studios” in order to bring gamers a great selection of useful mods from day 1, adding extra weapon types to the game, new enemy types and even “Leader” class soldiers to the game, how have unique team wide perks.

Firaxis Games has worked very hard to give XCOM a very modular approach to modding, allowing mods to be easily made and integrated into the game, allowing several mods to be easily supported together and for mod developers to have a much easier time integrating them into the game. Below is an interview that Eurogamer has had with developers from Faraxis Games and Long War studios which talks in depth about modding in XCOM 2.

One of the first mods for the game is the Muton Centurion mod, which adds a new Muton enemy type (pictured above) to the game that acts a a Mini-boss/ commander type alien character that is added around halfway through the games campaign, adding additional complexity to the game as well as a new target for your squads.

One of the other new mods adds leadership perks to the game, allowing you to give individual soldiers leadership qualities that can affect the whole squad, though for balance reasons Leaders are only limited to one per squad. This allows you to set up a squad with a specific leader who will have unique perks that influence the performance of both it’s squad and  him or herself, allowing you to pretty much build up a collection of Commander Shepard like characters during the campaign, provided they can survive that long.

The third and final mod that was described was the Sub-machine gun mod, which adds a new weapon type to the game. It acts a lot like an assault rifle but with less ammo capacity and weaker shots, but the units carrying them will move faster and be harder to detect, adding a whole new element of strategy to you characters load-outs.

Mod support has clearly been very important to the developers of XCOM 2, so hopefully these mods will only be the first of many that will be released for the game when it launched this Friday on PC.
