AMD unveils EXPO Ultra Low Latency memory for AMD Ryzen PCs
AMD unveils EXPO Ultra Low Latency memory to boost Ryzen’s gaming performance
AMD has just unveiled a new addition to AMD’s “EXPO” overclocking standard called “Ultra Low Latency” (ULL), which will be available with future memory kits from “leading memory partners”. This feature will only be available with new memory kits, so don’t expect your existing DDR5 memory kits to be upgraded. That said, this feature is a welcome addition given its performance implications.
Latency matters, and AMD’s EXPO Ultra Low Latency mode can deliver significant performance benefits in games. Compared to an older/standard EXPO memory kit without ULL, AMD says that this feature can deliver +4% FPS. Not bad for a bunch of tweaked memory timings. This applies to both average and 1st percentile framerates, at least according to AMD’s data, which saw AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X tested across 30 games.
Compared with a non-EXPO memory kit, EXPO ULL mode delivers a 13% boost to average FPS and a 15% increase to 1% lows. Gamers will likely see smaller benefits when using an AMD X3D gaming CPU. That said, even X3D CPUs can benefit from reduced memory latencies; you just need to find the right game.
So far, XPG, G.Skill, Kingston KLEVV, V-Color, Teamgroup, Lexar, and Origin Code plan to release EXPO ULL memory modules. At this time, AMD has not confirmed when EXPO ULL memory modules will be released. It is also unclear if EXPO ULL memory will carry premium prices.
Overall, AMD’s EXPO ULL feature is a solid add-on for Ryzen buyers. Essentially, they provide PC builders with pre-tweaked memory featuring additional optimisations. The result is that EXPO ULL memory should provide gamers with higher, smoother framerates.
