Samsung issues fresh memory price hike as shortage worsens

Samsung hikes DDR5 memory prices in response to surging demand

According to a report from Reuters, Samsung has hiked the prices of its server memory chips by 30-60% since September. With global demand for memory surging, mostly thanks to the buildout of large AI datacenters, memory prices have risen as the world’s supply has decreased.

This high demand for memory is having an impact on all areas of the technology sector. There isn’t enough DRAM to meet demand, and that means that many companies will not have enough supply to fulfil all of their demand. Furthermore, this tight supply has led to increased prices, making all manufacturers pay marked-up prices. Some companies will be forced to reduce their manufacturing volumes, as they may not be able to access enough memory to create their products.

Samsung’s contract prices for 32 GB DDR5 memory chips have reportedly increased from $149 to $239 since September. 16GB and 128GB memory chips have also seen price increases of around 50%. The shortage of memory chips has reportedly resulted in “panic buying” by some customers.

Today’s memory shortage will see the prices of most electronic devices soar. If it needs DRAM, it will soon be more expensive to produce.

Memory manufacturers are reportedly confident that memory pricing will continue to increase. Customers want long-term supply agreements with memory manufacturers. These agreements can span the entirety of 2026, with some spanning both 2026 and 2027.
