HDMI 2.2 is due to be revealed ahead of CES in January

The HDMI Forum is due to reveal HDMI 2.2 in January

According to a report from Tweakers, the HDMI Forum plans to reveal HDMI 2.2 ahead of CES 2025. Specifically, the new standard is due to be revealed on January 6th.

Sadly, no exact information about this new HDMI standard is known. The new standard is due to support “higher bandwidth” and be a “new HDMI cable.” We expect HDMI 2.2 to attempt to match or surpass DisplayPort 2.1, which can deliver a maximum bandwidth of 80 Gbps.

HDMI 2.1, the newest HDMI standard, supports up to 48 Gbps of bandwidth. This is enough to support 4K at up to 144Hz and 8K at 30Hz. With Display Stream Compression (DSC), resolutions up to 10K can be supported.

With their next iteration of the HDMI standard, HDMI should be able to support higher resolutions and refresh rates without the need for compression. Perhaps this will enable the release of more 4K 240Hz screens and other high-resolution/refresh rate displays.

Currently, it is unknown if HDMI 2.2 will be supported by any of the products that will be revealed at CES 2025. AMD and Nvidia are due to reveal new GPUs at this event. Will any of these GPUs support this new version of HDMI?

You can join the discussion on HDMI 2.2’s upcoming reveal on the OC3D Forums.
