Nvidia shuts down “PC maker” buyout rumours

Nvidia denies claims that it wants to buy a large “PC maker”

Following a report from Semi Accurate claiming that Nvidia “is negotiating to buy a large PC oriented company”, rumours ran wild. Many assumed that Nvidia wanted to buy a PC manufacturer (“PC maker”), such as Dell or HP, which caused the share prices of both companies to rise. Now, Nvidia has officially refuted these rumours, though their language is very specific.

Nvidia has confirmed that it has “not engaged in discussions to acquire any PC maker”. That said, the original reports merely said “PC oriented company”, not a “PC maker” specifically. This leaves room for Semi Accurate’s reporting to still be correct. That said, Nvidia’s statement confirms that Nvidia has no plan to acquire Dell, HP, or any similar company.

The media report is false; NVIDIA is not engaged in discussions to acquire any PC maker

Nvidia to CNBC

Semi Accurate claims that “Nvidia is looking to make a huge purchase that will reshape the PC and server landscape like nothing else has done since the computer was invented” and that they were “dead serious” about this claim. If this claim doesn’t refer to a major PC manufacturer like Dell or HP, what kind of company could Nvidia be planning to purchase? With alleged PC and server market implications, it can’t be a peripheral maker or accessories manufacturer.

Honestly, the idea of Nvidia buying Dell or HP was a complete non-starter. These companies don’t just buy Nvidia hardware, and there is no viable path to making them Nvidia-only. Furthermore, buying such a large customer would send a negative message to other Nvidia customers, encouraging them to explore other options. While Nvidia may make smaller acquisitions, buying Dell or HP would be a step too far.
