Phil Spencer comments on huge Xbox Leak in company memo

Phil Spencer Xbox Leak

Xbox boss calls leaked information “old” stating that “so much has changed”

In recent days, Microsoft’s entire Xbox strategy has leaked online though the accidental release of court documents, detailing much of the company’s console strategy as well as plans for their next-generation Xbox. Phil Spencer has now commented on this major Xbox leak, stating that the information from the leak is “old”. Spencer also commented that “so much has changed” since then, and that Xbox will share is “real” plans “when we are ready”.

Microsoft’s court documents leak contained details for an Xbox Series Refresh, which includes two console revisions and a new gamepad. Additionally, this leak also revealed a Bethesda games roadmap, which included several unannounced games.

Phil Spencer has claimed that Microsoft’s plans have “evolved” since the creation of their now leaked documents. Gamers should not expect the details of Microsoft’s leaks to be an accurate representation of the company’s current plans. Let’s hope that Microsoft has reconsidered their plans to make a disk-free Xbox Series X…

Below are the contents of a memo that was sent to Microsoft employees from Phil Spencer. This memo was first published by The Verge.

Team,

Today, several documents submitted in the court proceedings related to our proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard were unintentionally disclosed. I know this is disappointing, even if many of the documents are well over a year old and our plans have evolved.

I also know we all take the confidentiality of our plans and our partners’ information very seriously. This leak obviously is not us living up to that expectation. We will learn from what happened and be better going forward. We all put incredible amounts of passion and energy into our work, and this is never how we want that hard work to be shared with the community. That said, there’s so much more to be excited about, and when we’re ready, we’ll share the real plans with our players.

In closing, I appreciate all of the work that you pour into Team Xbox to surprise and delight our players. In the days and weeks ahead, let’s stay focused on what we can control: continuing the amazing success of Starfield, the upcoming launch of the incredible and accessible Forza Motorsport, and continuing to build games, services and devices that millions of players can enjoy.

Are the documents from Microsoft’s Xbox leak still accurate?

There is no question that Microsoft’s leaked documents were accurate at the time they were created. Even so, plans change and evolve over time. Microsoft’s documents are a snapshot of what the company were planning at the time of each document’s creation, and only time will tell whether or not these plans have changed.

Bethesda’s leaked games roadmap showcases how plans change over time. Based on that roadmap, Starfield should have launched years earlier than it did. Bethesda’s leaked roadmap confirms that several other games have also been delayed.

Are Microsoft’s leaked Xbox plans outdated? We will have to wait and see.
