PS6 “Canis” Handheld Specifications Leak – Zen 6, RDNA 5, and more

Next-generation PlayStation “Canis” Specifications Leak

Specifications for Sony’s planned PlayStation 6 “Canis” handheld have leaked, unveiling a device that is expected to comfortably surpass the ROG Xbox Ally X in terms of handheld gaming performance. The device reportedly features AMD Zen 6 CPU cores and RDNA 5 graphics, targeting a potential launch in late 2027.

Based on leaked information from Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony’s new handheld is expected to feature six total CPU cores. This includes four Zen 6c CPU cores and two Zen 6 LP CPU cores. The Zen 6 LP cores will be dedicated to the console’s OS, dedicating the system’s more powerful cores to gaming.

The handheld reportedly features a 192-bit LPDDR5-8533 memory controller and can theoretically support up to 48GB of RAM. However, Sony has not finalised the console’s memory capacity and is actively talking to developers to see how much memory a next-generation console needs.

PS6 “Canis” handheld GPU – Handheld and Docked modes unveiled

Based on today’s leak, Sony’s new handheld is expected to feature 16 RDNA 5 compute units and be clocked at 1.2 GHz in handheld mode. In docked mode, the console will boost to 1.65 GHz. This will boost the GPU’s computational performance by 37.5%.

AMD’s RDNA 5 compute units are expected to increase AMD’s per-CU gaming performance by 40-50% compared to the RDNA 3.5 architecture. The performance uplift is expected to be even higher in ray tracing workloads. In docked mode, the PS6 Handheld is expected to deliver 55%-75% of the PlayStation 5’s performance in rasterisation workloads. In ray tracing, the handheld should deliver 1.3-2.6x the PS5’s performance. This suggests that many PS5 games will likely need to be patched to run well on Sony’s PS6 handheld. Perhaps this is why many new games have a “low power” mode.

With new additions like AMD FSR 4-like upscaling, Sony’s PS6 handheld should deliver a strong gaming experience. That said, many PS5 games will need patches to properly utilise the new hardware.

Storage and game support

If this leak is correct, Sony’s new handheld should support M.2 SSD storage and MicroSD storage. MicroSD storage will likely be limited to MicroSD Express, as modern games require fast storage. Note that Sony’s new handheld is due to support PS4 and PS5 games. Currently, there are no reports of PS3 game support.

All in all, Sony’s leaked PS5 handheld specifications are impressive. With its wider memory bus and faster memory speeds, this device should feature 60% more memory bandwidth than ASUS’ ROG Xbox Ally X. However, it is worth noting that this handheld is over two years away from launch, and the ROG Xbox Ally is releasing soon. Furthermore, these specifications blow Nintendo’s Switch 2 console out of the water. Regardless, it remains to be seen how much this console will cost or how it will perform in real-world gaming scenarios.
