AMD will power the US Navy’s latest supercomputer with 290,304 EPYC CPU cores

AMD has scored another major design win within the supercomputing market, as the US Navy has decided to utilise their EPYC series processors in its latest system. This system will be placed within the Department of Defense Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC), with the supercomputer arriving as part of their High-Performance Computing modernisation efforts. 

The PC will be delivered by Cray and will utilise a total of 290,304 EPYC CPU cores alongside 122 of Nvidia’s Volta V100 graphics processors. The system will also feature 14 Petabytes (PB) of usable storage, which includes 1 PB of NVMe-based storage, and a total of 590 terabytes of system memory. In terms of computational performance, the supercomputer will be capable of 12.8 PertFLOPS of computational performance, a feat which would rank this system amongst the top 25 supercomputers today. 

Cray hopes to deliver this system early in their 2021 fiscal year, confirming that the system will utilise its Slingshot network to interconnect this system’s components at a data rate of up to 200 Gigabits per second (Gbps).

Ultimately, the purpose of this system will be to enhance the US Navy’s weather forecasting models, which will allow them to better judge how future weather conditions will affect their ships. This supercomputer will also enhance hurricane intensity and tracking forecasts, making this supercomputer useful outside of military applications.
