Automatic Super Resolution to come to the ROG Xbox Ally X next month
At GDC 2026, Microsoft has confirmed that Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is coming to the ROG Xbox Ally X in April. This is a Windows-level upscaling solution designed to improve the image quality of games when rendering at a sub-native resolution. This NPU-based upscaling solution highlights the benefits of a dedicated NPU in the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld.
Below, we can see Automatic Super Resolution being used with an ROG Xbox Ally X when connected to an external 1440p display. With Automatic Super Resolution enabled, a nearly 30% performance boost is achieved alongside “nearly equivalent visuals”.
Right now, Microsoft’s documentation for Auto SR states that it is only available with supported DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. However, with added support for the ROG Xbox Ally X, this feature could come to a wider selection of games.

As a Windows-level feature, Auto SR can potentially support all PC games. Since it is not directly integrated into games, it could deliver AI upscaling to games that lack DLSS, XeSS, or FSR support. Furthermore, it makes NPU hardware useful for gamers, at least within the handheld/laptop gaming space.
Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox reportedly features NPU hardware (leak here). If this is true, a version of Auto SR could be available on the next-generation Xbox “Project Helix”. Perhaps it could be used to upscale some classic Xbox games to higher resolutions? That said, many Xbox classics already run at high resolutions as “Xbox Enhanced” titles.
