Borderlands 3’s latest patch improved DX12 mode – Now Default for Radeon users
How long were these load times? Let’s put it this way; you couldn’t be sure if the game had crashed, or of the game was just taking a that long to load. Sometimes the game would take longer than three minutes to boot, making the game’s DirectX 12 mode a chore to play and test.Â
Now, thanks to Borderlands 3’s patch 4, Borderlands 3’s DirectX 12 woes appear to be behind them. So much so, that DirectX 12 is now the API of choice for users of Radeon graphics cards. If you are on Windows 10 and are using a compatible Radeon GPU, Borderlands 3 will default to DirectX 12. Â
This is great news for Borderlands 3 players, as Borderlands 3 is a game that can be very CPU limited. This was covered in our PC performance analysis for the game, where we found that the game’s 95th percentile framerates could be boosted by over 13FPS within the game’s benchmark. We also found that larger boosts were possible in-game. If Borderlands 3 is CPU-limited for you, DirectX 12 will help address that.Â

Below is a chart from our PC Performance Review of Borderlands 3, highlighting how much DirectX 12 can boost Borderlands 3’s performance, even on Nvidia-powered systems.Â
Radeon graphics card users will also benefit from increased GPU performance, but gamers from both the Geforce and Radeon camps can benefit from DirectX 12 CPU-based improvements. Â
