Chrome ending support for older versions of Windows and OS X

Chrome ending support for older versions of Windows and OS X, saying that these platforms “are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple”. Google Chome will continue to function the same that it currently does, but the platform will no longer be receiving any updates for these operating systems, which will potentially leave your PCs insecure.

Microsoft Advise users of older PCs to transition to a newer operating system in order to continue to receive support. Below is the companies official blog post regarding this change.

Earlier this year, we announced that Google Chrome would continue support for Windows XP through the remainder of 2015.  At that time, we strongly encouraged users on older, unsupported platforms such as Windows XP to update to a supported, secure operating system. Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware.

Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.

While Google does say that these platforms are no longer supported by Microsoft or Apple, we must remember that Vista is still currently getting security support and updates from Microsoft and will continue to receive them until 2017.  It does make sense to quit supporting older, legacy operating systems but the the sheer amount of time and effort required is simply not worth if for Google given their tiny user bases.

It is a  shame for support for Google Chome to end on XP, Vista and OS X 10.6 and OS X 10.7, but we must remember that supporting these platforms cannot last forever and at some point people need to move on to newer software.
