CIG starts selling VIP exclusive tanks in Star Citizen – Mark Hamill appears in Squadron 42 trailer

Cloud Imperium Games has released some new footage for Squadron 42 and has opened up a new battle tank called the Tumbril Nova, neither of which reveals much about either Star Citizen or Squadron 42.

In the trailer below (from IGN First), we can see a small clip of the Squadron 42’s campaign where the player meets Steve “Old Man” Colton a veteran Pilot of the UEE Navy. This trailer is no doubt designed to build some hype for the game after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, revealing little more than the personality of Mark Hamill’s in-game character.

Yesterday a new tank was also released for pre-order within the game, a vehicle which is exclusive to VIP level backers of Star Citizen. This battle tank will cost between $95 and $725, with the vehicle itself having not much more than a than an image and a little bit or lore text to describe it. At this time it is unknown how useful ground combat vehicles will be within the game, given the game’s focus on starships.

With this item being exclusive to high-level backers of Star Citizen, it is hard to see this an anything other than an attempt to milk the whales who have already heavily backed Star Citizen’s development. At this time the game has no firm release date for either the MMO Star Citizen or the single-player game Squadron 42.

Those who try to access the web page for the Tumbril Tank will be greeted with an “ACCESS DENIED” message unless they are a VIP backer of Star Citizen.

This comes mere weeks after “Land Claim Licenses” started being sold o Star Citizen backers, only serving to make Cloud Imperium Games seem greedy and or desperate for additional funding. At the time of writing Star Citizen has generated over $174 million in funding, which is more than two times higher than the game’s final stretch goal funding target of $65 million.

At the time of writing, both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have no firm release dates, leaving many to assume that the game will not be launching anytime soon.

– Update – The Tumbril Nova Tank has now become available to purchase for all. The tank’s original webpage remains locked, but the new store page can be viewed here. The vehicle is designed to be driven by three crew, though today’s vehicle specifications are subject to change.
