Denuvo acquired by Irdeto – Anti-Piracy tools are about to get stronger
Regardless of your opinion of Denuvo, the anti-tamper technology has prevented a lot of piracy on the PC platform, so much so that the technology was considered uncrackable until very recently, with the technology remaining popular amongst developers even after pirates discovered able to bypass the technology. Since Denuvo was first cracked, it has been a tug-of-war between the company and pirates to remain one step ahead of each other, with many recent games remaining uncracked for months after launch. Â
Today the security firm Irdeto has announced that they will be joining forces with Denuvo, with Irdeto acquiring the company for an undisclosed sum of money. This partnership will bring some of the industries leading security experts together to allow both companies to improve their security and anti-piracy solutions, revealing plans to integrate Irdeto Cloakware into Denuvo’s Anti-piracy/Anti-Tamper technology to enhance the strength of the already popular software protection tool.Â
Below is a comment from Denuvo’s managing director, Reinhard Blaukovitsch.Â
Hackers and cybercriminals in the gaming space are savvy, and always have been. It is critical to implement robust security strategies to combat the latest gaming threats and protect the investment in games. Much like the movie industry, itâs the only way to ensure that great games continue to get made,In joining with Irdeto, we are bringing together a unique combination of security expertise, technology and enhanced piracy services to aggressively address security challenges that customers and gamers face from hackers.

Denuvo is currently used by most major developers and game publishers, with their client list including Bethesda, EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Warner Brothers and more, providing security from early cracks and piracy to protect the game’s initial sales. Publishers and developers want to protect their investments, making a robust security platform a must in the digital age.Â
Right now it remains to be seen how Irdeto’s Cloakware technology will impact Denuvo, though it has the potential to bring Denuvo back into its glory days of nigh uncrackability (at least for a while), which is good news for publishers and bad news for pirates.Â
