Early Stadia reviews highlight game streaming’s latency hit

Pre-launch reviews for Google’s Stadia platform has just launched, and things aren’t as positive as many were expecting. Over at Eurogamer, the technology boffins over at Digital Foundry have already conducted some latency testing, and have concluded that Google’s Stadia streaming service adds an extra 44-56ms of input latency to games. 

To put this into perspective, this adds between 3-4 frames of latency to a 60Hz refresh rate screen when compared to non-Stadia games at the same framerate. With Destiny 2, Xbox One X offers players around 100ms of input latency when running at 30FPS. On Stadia, the game runs at 60FPS and has 144ms of input latency. 

While it is worth noting that Stadia’s latency will vary depending on your distance from Google’s gaming servers and that different actions within a game can showcase different latency characteristics. Even so, when comparing the same actions over various games, Digital Foundry pegged Stadia’s latency delta as 44-56ms when compared to in-home consoles. 

For many games, 44-56ms of added latency won’t be a big deal, especially within single-player titles. However, it does showcase one of the many problems with game streaming solutions. In Mortal Kombat 11, this latency hit adds an extra 56% of input delay to the game, which is a big deal in a fighting game.
