European Courts rule that Employers can read the private messages of employees
Â
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has made a ruling in a case where a Romanian engineer was fired after using Yahoo Messenger not only to communicate with professional contacts but also to contact his family.Â
This ruling states that employers have the right to monitor their workers private online communications, dismissing the employee’s right to privacy and compromising his confidential correspondences. Â
The court stated that it was ânot unreasonable that an employer would want to verify that employees were completing their professional tasks during working hoursâ, siding with the employer in this matter.Â
This ruling sets a precedent which allows employers to monitor the private communications of their employees, not just on Yahoo messenger but also on WhatsApp and other similar messaging services.Â
