Fortnite Battle Royale is gaining cross-platform play/progression

Epic Games has revealed that Fortnite: Battle Royale is gaining cross-platform support, alongside new mobile versions on iOS and Android. Curiously, Fortnite will not be getting cross-platform support on Xbox One, though the phrase “in partnership with Sony” reveals why not all console versions of the game are being treated equally, Sony won’t support cross-platform play with Xbox One.

On mobile devices, Fortnite will offer the “same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates”, with the promise of cross-platform play with PS4 and PC users showing a high degree of confidence that Epic and get the game running on mobile hardware. At this time Epic Games has not confirmed that Fortnite: Battle Royale is coming to Nintendo Switch, which you would think would be an easier platform to develop for than the iOS or Android ecosystems.

PC cross-play support with PS4 explains why Epic has worked so hard to develop a 60FPS mode for the title on console hardware, allowing the game to be played on a somewhat more equal playing field with PC gamers. While keyboard/mouse users will maintain an advantage over gamepad users, at least there isn’t also a huge framerate gap to contend with.

Epic Games believes in a cross-platform future, through their partnership with Sony and the absence of Xbox One cross-platform support showcases why cross-platform support remains uncommon. It is ultimately down to the platform holder whether or not such features can be implemented, which in this case means that Epic needs to leave Xbox One users in the dark.
