Fortnite’s update 4.2 promises increased performance and higher tick rates

Fortnite’s update 4.2 is here, removing Thanos from the game while introducing a large number of changes to the title that affect game balance and performance.

With this update, Epic Games has increased their server tick rate from 20 to 30 updates per second, which will make the game feel a lot more responsive and reduced “effective ping times” for players. One side effect of this change is that the game’s internet bandwidth requirements will increase slightly for players.

Another change this update offers is a 2x improvement to material loading, which will allow characters, buildings and other objects to stream in faster, reducing hitching and other potential slowdowns. Epic Games has also implemented changes that will minimise hitching when specific cosmetic items appear in a match for the first time, stabilising Fortnite’s gameplay significantly.

Other direct changes also include optimisations to the particle effect of “Hop Rocks”, which will improve the game’s framerate when they are visible on-screen.

Fortnite 4.2 promises increased performance and higher tick rates

Fortnite is Epic Games’ showpiece for the Unreal Engine 4, offering a unique art style with pleasing visuals while delivering impressive performance levels on all platforms. Fortnite Battle Royale is playable on PS4, Xbox One, PC and iOS, showcasing the versatility of Unreal Engine 4 by offering the cross-platform support that can link all Fortnite players together, except for PS4 and Xbox One users.

Update 4.2 continues to improve Fortnite’s performance and stability on all platforms, with this update’s increased tick rate delivering more responsive controls, reduced “effective ping times” and more competitive multiplayer experience.
