Maxon Forces Removal of Standalone Cinebench R20 Download Through Legal Threat

Cinebench R20 was released on Tuesday, bringing Maxon’s Cinema 4D benchmarking tool up to date with the applications’ latest version (Cinema 4D version 20), complete with a harsher test scene, optimisations for modern CPU designs and enhanced support for high core count processors.

The only major downside of this benchmark is its exclusivity to the Microsoft Store on Windows, which has been subverted by some tech sites, such as Guru of 3D, who made the application downloadable as a standalone application.

Many PC gamers prefer downloading Cinebench as a standalone application, with many PC enthusiasts boycotting the Microsoft Store due to its lack of user-friendly features. Other prefer to keep a copy of Cinebench on USB drives, as it allows them to quickly load it onto newly build systems, even if they lack internet access. Now it looks like Maxon has plans to kill off standalone downloads of Cinebench R20.

Guru of 3D has confirmed that they are no longer offering their readers download of Cinebench R20, citing legal pressure from Maxon against the website. It is likely that other websites will see similar pressures over the coming days, which will result in Cinebench R20 downloads being removed from more locations.

Hilbert Hagedoorn, the “Guru of 3D” released the following statement regarding the change.

Unfortunately, Maxon has made a legal threat against Guru3D.com and is forcing us to take the Cinebench R20 download offline.

Maxon Computer GmBh will only allow the download of Cinebench R20 through UWP (Microsoft Store). Though we strongly feel that this is a community tool which belongs in the public domain we obviously totally need to respect what the publisher deems appropriate for them. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.

You can download Cinebench R20 through the Microsoft Store
