Norton’s letting you mine crypto on your Antivirus
Starting today, early adopters of Norton Crypto will be invited to mine Ethereum on their service, a popular cryptocurrency that plans to move away from mining later this year.Â
The irony of this business move is that Antivirus software often sees cryptocurrency mining programs as malicious software and that many hackers earn money by installing cryptocurrency miners onto the systems of those they attack. Norton plans to provide its users with cryptocurrency mining software that is safe and easy to use, relying on the trusted nature of their Norton 360 platform to gain support.Â
Below is a statement from Norton’s CEO, Vincent Pilette.Â
As the crypto economy continues to become a more important part of our customersâ lives, we want to empower them to mine cryptocurrency with Norton, a brand they trust. Norton Crypto is yet another innovative example of how we are expanding our Cyber Safety platform to protect our customersâ ever-evolving digital lives.
 Â
Given Ethereum’s planned move to a proof-of-stake will kill off cryptocurrency mining for the currency. This means that Norton Crypto will need to adopt a new cryptocurrency sometime in the near future. Without Ethereum, the value of Norton Crypto is questionable, though Norton sees long-term value in this enterprise.Â
