Octopath Traveler has been officially announced for PC

It’s official, Octopath Traveler, a former Nintendo Switch exclusive, is coming to PC, releasing via Valve’s Steam platform. All marketing materials for the game point towards the title being a Steam store exclusive.

The official release date for the PC version of Octopath Traveler is June 7th, which is less than two months from now. Octopath Traveler is a retro-style RPG with a unique “HD-2D” art style, merging the graphical styles of classic SNES RPGs with the perks of modern 3D hardware and rendering techniques, providing longtime RPG fans with a breathtaking, yet familiar, look and feel.

For this release, Square Enix has decided to steer clear from PC game launchers outside of Steam, despite the economic benefits of platforms such as the Epic Games Store. As an Unreal Engine 4 title, Square Enix could have avoided Epic Games’ 5% engine licensing fee if they released their PC version on the Epic Games Store, while also benefitting from the storefront’s higher revenue share rate. For this launch, Square Enix believes that Steam is the best launch platform for their game, though the title could come to other launchers later.

At this time Octopath Traveler’s PC version lacks PC system requirements, though, given the title’s origins on Nintendo’s Switch hardware, the game is unlikely to need a powerful PC to run well.
