Okami HD will have a 30FPS lock on PC
Sadly, Okami HD will not release with an unlocked framerate on PC, offering a 30FPS framerate lock on all modern platforms. Capcom’s Chief Operating Officer, Wbacon, has stated that this is due to the game’s legacy PS3 code, which tied several elements of the game to its framerate.
When Okami was initially developed, the game was never intended to be released outside of Sony’s PS2 console, which means that there was no reason for the game’s developers not to tie elements of the game to its framerate target or make use of other programming tricks to simplify the game’s development.
Capcom did experiment with a 60FPS mode for the title, though this change impacted game logic, collision detection, animation speed and several other factors. A lot of work would be required to create an entirely functional 60FPS mode, which is something that Capcom was unwilling to do with the game’s PS4, Xbox One and PC versions.
Thankfully on PC, the game will come with Mouse/Keyboard controls as well as support for X-input, Dualshock 4 and Steam Controller Gamepads, which will allow the game to be played using almost all possible control options on the platform.
Capcom’s decision to lock the game to 30FPS on PC, Xbox One and PS4 is disappointing, especially when the power of modern hardware is taken to account. The decision to lack this game to 30FPS is understandable, though that does not make this move from Capcom any less disappointing.
Okami HD will release on PC on December 12th for £15.99/$19.99.
