Over 6,000 games have been released on Steam this year

Every year more and more games are releasing on Steam, PC’s largest gaming platform. This is thanks to an increase in the number of the platform’s concurrent users, games becoming easier to develop thanks to engines like Unreal and Unity and Valve’s own curation system, which has gradually moved from being highly curated to a self-publish model where developers need to pay $100 to access the service.

It has now been reported that over 6,000 games have been released in 2017 so far, almost as many games as what was released on the platform between 2005 and 2015 and around 1,500 more than were released in 2016. This data comes from Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners.

Since 2014 the number of new Steam games has increased significantly, leading many to argue that Steam has become too open while others see this as a natural progression that allows smaller developers to easily access Steam’s userbase.

With so many games releasing on the platform in a daily basis it is easy to see why so many low-quality games are on the platform and why Valve has had to abandon their “New Releases” section in the store homepage in favour of a “New and Trending” section.
