PS3 Emulation is easier than ever thanks to RPCS3 “Plug and play”

PlayStation 3 emulation has become easier than ever

RPCS3, the PlayStation 3 emulator, has received a new “Plug and Play” update that makes game configuration much easier. With the newest version of the emulator, PS3 games will now “automatically configure themselves” using recommended settings from the RPCS3 Wiki. Until now, these settings needed to be configured manually on a game-by-game basis.

The RPCS3 Wiki features a list of game-specific tweaks that will give gamers the best possible experience. With the emulator’s “Plug and Play” update, these tweaks are now made automatically. This should make it easier for users of the emulator to set up their games, as games are preconfigured with the best settings the RPCS3 community has developed. Note that users can override these settings with their own custom settings if they wish.

Does this mean that RPCS3 now communicates with the RPCS3 Wiki servers?

No, RPCS3 does not talk to RPCS3 Wiki servers. The RPCS3 team has confirmed that a complete config database is compiled and packaged into every new RPCS3 package/build. This means that these game-specific settings can be utilised on offline devices, and that RPCS3 users will not need to rely on external servers for information. Should the RPCS3 Wiki’s servers go offline, users need not worry.

As of now, the RPCS3 Emulator classes 73.93% of games as “playable”. Compared to the start of this year, this is major progress. After all, RPCS3 only passed 70% playability in January.

Last month, the RPCS3 team were able to announce a major “breakthrough” in SPU emulation. This change alone delivered 5-7% performance gain in Twisted Metal, an SPU-heavy game. This change boosts the performance of all PlayStation 3 games on RPCS3. After all, the PlayStation 3’s SPUs are the console’s defining feature.

A special thanks goes to AniLeo, Megamouse, HerrHulaHoop, and FlexBy for making RPCS3’s “Plug and Play” update possible.
