Sony confirms “next FSR update” from AMD with “upgraded PSSR” innovations

Sony confirms that AMD has a new version of FSR in the works

When announcing the rollout of its “Improved PSSR” AI upscaler, Sony confirmed that AMD is working on a new version of its FSR upscaler. AMD and Sony PlayStation are collaborating on AI algorithms and neural networks as part of their “Project Amethyst” partnership. Sony’s improved PSSR version is one of the fruits of this partnership, and it represents the “very latest innovations” from their co-developed technologies.

AMD has a new version of FSR that will “bring these advancements to even more players around the world”. In other words, Sony’s PSSR features advancements that AMD’s current implementation of FSR (FSR 4) lacks.

Also, please note that the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. This upgraded PSSR represents the very latest innovations in our co-developed technology; stay tuned for AMD’s next FSR update that will bring these advancements to even more players around the world!

AMD is rumoured to be launching FSR 4.1 in the near future, and Sony’s teaser appears to confirm this. An early version of FSR 4.1 leaked last month, and it does deliver visual quality enhancements over FSR 4.

If AMD and Sony are co-marketing their “Project Amethyst” innovations, it could make sense for AMD to release its improved FSR 4.1 technology this week. Personally, I expect FSR 4.1 to arrive as part of AMD’s optimised GPU drivers for Crimson Desert, AMD’s second FSR Redstone game.
