SteamOS is now ready for Valve’s Steam Machine launch
With the stable release of SteamOS version 3.8.10, Valve has officially confirmed that it’s ready for the launch of Steam Machine. Valve’s Steam Machine is their new Linux-powered gaming PC that aims to deliver a AAA gaming experience without the hassle of Windows. The Steam Deck experience with a more powerful console-like form factor.
With SteamOS 3.8.10, Valve has moved its OS to Linux Kernel 6.16, updated its graphics drivers, and added “HDMI VRR” for devices with a “native HDMI output”. Do you know what SteamOS device has a native HDMI output? The Steam Machine!
Valve has also improved the SteamOS desktop experience by updating it from KDE Plasma 6.4.3 to version 6.2.5. Initial support for the gaming-optimised LAVD CPU scheduler has also been added.
Rumour has it that Valve plans to launch its new Steam Machine hardware within the next few weeks. SteamOS version 3.8.1 supports this claim. If Valve wants to launch the Steam Machine soon, SteamOS needs to be ready. Starting now, Valve’s SteamOS is ready for the company’s console-like Linux PC.
Full release notes for SteamOS version 3.8.1 are available here. Note that this version of SteamOS also includes improvements for 3rd-party PC handhelds. This includes “upcoming Intel handhelds”. SteamOS support for Intel ARC G3 series handhelds is coming!
