The Outer Worlds is now an Epic Games Store Timed Exclusive

Epic Games has announced that Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds has become the latest in a series of Epic Games Store timed exclusives, a move which will see the game release on Steam sometime in 2020.

The Outer Worlds is currently set to be an Epic Games Store exclusive for at least a year, with Obsidian planning to release the game on both Steam and the Microsoft Store after their agreement with Epic Games expires. At this time The Outer Worlds has no firm release date, though it is currently set to launch sometime in 2019.

Obsidian Entertainment is the developer behind Fallout New Vegas, the game that many gamers consider to be the best of the series. Through Unreal Engine 4, Obsidian plans to deliver a full AAA RPG experience, offering graphical features that extend beyond what we have seen in Bethesda’s most recent Fallout releases.

Thanks to The Outer Worlds’ use of Unreal Engine 4, Obsidian Entertainment can waive their engine licencing fees for game sales on the Epic Storefront, which are typically set at 5%. Combine this with Epic Games’ favourable revenue sharing model and Obsidian Entertainment, and The Outer World’s publisher, Private Division, a much larger portion of the game’s PC revenues.

Today, Epic Games also announced that Quantic Dream would be bringing Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human to PC as Epic Games Store exclusives. These games are sure to bring more PC gamers into Epic Games’ platform, which in turn may attract more and more developers away from Steam.
