The RPCS3 PS3 emulator sees a huge performance boost with Vulkan
The RPCS3 PS3 emulator has now seen a huge performance boost using the new Vulkan API, allowing several games to now achieve playable framerates when using modern PC hardware.
In the video below, the Emulator’s lead developer, Nekotekina, shows footage from six different PC games, like Catherine, Demon’s Souls, Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Digimon: All-Stat Rumble and Tekken Tag Tournament HD.
This emulator is still in its early stages of development, with most popular PS4 titles still being incompatible with the latest version of RPCS3, though some modern games like Persona 5 have been shown to function on the emulator (not with playable/steady framerates).
The largest improvement can be seen in Atelier Ayesha: Alchemist of Dush, which previously had an average framerate of around 8FPS and now runs at over 30FPS with the latest build of RPCS3.
At this time RPCS3 is not ready for pick up and play emulation fans, as this emulator is far from perfect. Right now the best option for playing PS3 games on PC is still through the use of Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service, though it also has its disadvantages.
