Total War: ROME II free Family Tree and Graphical update almost five years post-launch

The Total War series is amongst PC gaming’s most popular franchises on PC, so much so that several games in the series can frequently be found within Steam’s top played games lists.

Despite its release in late 2013, Rome II remains one of the series’ most popular entries, currently holding a concurrent playerbase that is larger than both Far Cry 5 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, to of this year’s most popular game releases. This long-term popularity has prompted Creative Assembly to create more content for the title, including both free and paid DLC.

Rome II has received its new “Family Tree” update, which not only implements changes to the family trees and intrigue screens of characters but also adds culture-specific agent skills, general skills and implements several quality-of-life improvements for those that have played newer Total War titles.

Another significant change with this patch is the addition of several new graphical options and effects, which allow Rome II to look better than ever before, adding options for MSAA, Clouds shadow, Terrain noise for additional distant detail, increased LOD distances for Ultra and Extreme settings and improved shadow quality and performance. This optional patch will allow Rome II to look a lot better than before and will enable the game to make better use of modern graphics hardware.

Right now, Total War: Rome II’s “Family Tree and Graphical Improvements”/Ancestral patch is an optional download and is available only to those who opt-in to the update. This update will be enabled automatically for all Rome II players at a later date, after Creative Assembly receives feedback from players. Below are instructions on how to download Rome II’s Ancestral patch.

– Restart Steam
– Find Total War: ROME II – Emperor Edition in your Steam library
– Right click Total War: ROME II – Emperor Edition and go to Properties in the drop-down menu
