Valorant is moving to Unreal Engine 5

Riot Games is planning some major changes for Valorant, including a move to a new engine

At Unreal Feast 2024, Riot Games confirmed that Valorant will be upgraded to Unreal Engine 5. Currently, the game uses Unreal Engine 4.27, and Riot claims that they have “squeezed literally every ounce of everything we could get out of UE 4.” Moving to Unreal Engine 5 will add new features and technologies to Valorant, opening the door to some major changes for the tactical shooter.

Initially, the move to UE5 will not significantly change how Valorant looks or performs on PC and consoles. Things will undoubtedly change over time, but the initial move to Unreal Engine 5 should be fairly uneventful. It looks like Riot’s first step is to get Valorant running on Unreal Engine 5, as it should be. From there, Riot Games will then make use of Unreal Engine 5’s features and capabilities.

During their presentation, Riot Games’ Anna Donlan said that the game’s developers were “very excited about what UE5 can do for us in the future.” Furthermore, it was teased that those developers were “working on something I can’t talk about.” Later, she discussed how they could “expand” valorant’s universe with “new playable experiences.” For now, we can only speculate about what these new playable experiences will be.
