Silicon Motion SSDs unaffected by Windows 11 SSD-crashing bug

SMI SSD controllers appear to be unaffected by Windows 11’s SSD-crashing KB5063878 update

Following the release of Windows 11’s KB5063878 update, there have been reports of storage failures for a wide range of systems, including those with HDDs and SSDs. According to multiple reports, this issue can be triggered when large sequential writes are undertaken (50GB+). Following an error, Windows 11 fails to recognise affected drives, making them inaccessible. Now, Silicon Motion has stated that its drives are currently unaffected by this Windows 11 bug.

So far, none of Silicon Motion’s customers have reported any issues with their SSD controllers. While this does not guarantee that they are unaffected by Microsoft’s OS update, it implies that they are not susceptible to this error. Currently, the cause of this error is unknown.

As of now, Microsoft has not released any official statements about its KB5063878 update for Windows 11. Phison, another SSD controller manufacturer, has confirmed that it is investigating the issue.
