Atari’s VCS game console will be available of pre-order on May 30th
Pre-orders for Atari’s VCS hardware will start on May 30th, with a planned shipping date in Spring 2019, offering users access to the Atari Vault, which will provide users with more than 100 classic gaming titles. The VCS will also be able to play “many popular modern titles” due to its use of an x86 CPU, Radeon graphics and a Linux-based OS.
Early orders for the device will start at $199, which will give “early bird” purchasers with am Atari VCS Onyx, with a more expensive “limited time faux wood-panelled model will also be available. This version is unlikely to ship with Atari’s Classic Joystick and gamepad, as Atari states that these add-ons are “also available to order” and are not bundled with all VCS devices. These controllers will also be available as standalone products.
Atari has been extremely tight-lipped about the hardware that is included in the VCS, though we do know that the internal GPU will support 4K 60FPS HDR content playback, though it is unlikely that the device will be able to play any games at 4K 60FPS. Below are the known specifications of the Atari VCS.
– Custom AMD SoC with Radeon Graphics
– Support for 4K HDR resolutions at 60FPS
– Onboard and expandable storage options
– USB 3.0 support
– Dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0
Atari’s VCS home console will be available for pre-order on IndieGoGo on May 30th, with an official release sometime in Spring 2019, which means that end users will need to wait for almost a year for their VCS system.
