Overclocking

With everything in place to give us all the tools necessary to achieve high overclocks on our Core i9-7900X we were hopeful of the Rampage VI perhaps breaking the OC3D record for this CPU of 4.6 GHz, and it delivered in spades. 4.7 GHz.

Four point seven gigahertz.

From a 10 core/20 thread CPU. If that doesn’t whet your appetite and have you searching down the back of the sofa for some loose twenties, then we don’t know what will. Mental.

Great though 4.7 GHz is, and be in absolutely no doubt that it is amazing, our cooling just isn’t enough to run it like that all the way through our benchmark suite without encountering thermal throttling. We were always aware that around 1.225v was the safe limit for our CPU and cooling combo, beyond that point temps go up far to fast, we knew we would need a delidded version at some point and the Apex was the board we needed it for. If we could keep our temps down then we would have had much bigger scores to show you later in the review. Thus for our tests we’re running at a not-inconsiderable 4.5 GHz but for the first time ever on the processor with 3600 MHz DDR4 and the cache increased to 3200MHz.
