Introduction

Sometimes being an independent website with a small team can have its negative sides, especially when all the manufacturers release new hardware within a couple of weeks of each other. There are only so many hours in a day after all. But we slog our guts out for you to ensure you have all the facts at your fingertips. Rather later than planned, but nonetheless well before the Xmas rush, it’s time to look at the X670E motherboards in more detail.

If ever you need an example of why we are sit here to test and write about hardware products rather than design them then we think the ASUS Strix range is the perfect choice. We remember when they first released it and it was heavy on the Owl theme and seemed to be treading on the toes of established ROG brands such as Rampage and Maximus. Did ASUS really need yet another variant upon the theme of high end motherboard? As it turns out, yes. In fact that’s such a big yes that Strix is probably the best selling of all the various ASUS brands. They generally combine some gamer focused features with attractive price tags. You’re usually getting a lot of bang for your buck and sizzle with your steak. The Strix brand is the perfect demonstration that there can be a sweet spot between high end, high priced models, and ones that are affordable without cutting features to an intolerable level.

Technical Specifications

Rather than squeeze the beefy, but expensive, 105A power phases on to the Strix F, ASUS have instead stopped with 90A ones here. It should be more than enough, especially for the Ryzen 9 7900X we’re using to test all the latest AM5 motherboards. The F model Strix eschews the USB 4 we’ve seen on the other ASUS ROG motherboards we’ve reviewed, so we’re expecting this to be considerably more affordable than the Crosshairs or even the Strix E. It still has two PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, two PCIe 4.0, a PCIe 5 and 4 x16 slots as well as the PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. Otherwise it’s the full DDR5 experience with 16+2 90A power stages. Lovely.
