Up Close

Although the SLI PLUS isn’t labelled as a sequel to the Krait the black and white theme that the Krait brought to market, and influenced the move towards monochrome systems more than it gets credit for, is in full effect here. As you can see from the included accessories the SLI PLUS falls into the value end of the market, although there is all the stuff you’re likely to need.

The heatsinks are always the giveaway as to the cost of a motherboard, and the MSI Z170A is no exception. However, whilst it might have the air of simplicity about it we love the all black looks and the freedom they’ll give you in your colour choice. An all-black system would be just the ticket.

Despite the value target of the SLI PLUS we really can’t excuse mixing vertical SATA ports with horizontal ones. When you’re buying parts from Foxconn in the millions – as MSI must surely be doing – then the price difference is non-existent. We’d gladly pay the 10p or so extra necessary for all horizontal ports. It just looks dodgy.

The PCI Express ports are about the only bit of flair on the SLI PLUS, with their chrome accoutrements providing something to catch the eye without dominating proceedings.
