Nvidia GTX 1060 Founders Edition Review

Up Close

As a Founders Edition card the GTX 1060 comes equipped with nVidia’s latest generation of heat sink and cooler. We think it looks spectacular, blending silver with black to give a card which looks classy and understated. The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 had a full silver surround, but the GTX 1070 has a fan surround which either looks like a TIE Hunter or the Enterprise, depending on which way you consider that it is facing.

Unveiling the card and you can see that nVidia are making sure that the card is solid rather than the old approach of cutting down the cooler costs along with the card price. A metal chassis keeps everything very rigid as well as assisting in heat dissipation.

We remain wholly unconvinced by nVidia’s solution to the power input placement problem on a shorter PCB. Sure if you’re sticking with the air cooler then you wont notice, but if you plan on water cooling your GTX 1060 then this “flapping about on the end of a cable” solution will hardly inspire confidence nor neatness.

As the GTX 1060 isn’t using the the PCB of its bigger brothers we’re somewhat surprised to find that there are two spare memory spots. If we were cynical we’d suggest that these are in anticipation of a future 8GB GTX 1060 Ti. After all, why would they design a PCB for this model and include something they aren’t using?
