Up Close and Lighting

Fans of Corsair’s Dominator Platinum series of memory modules should recognise the series’ packaging, maintaining the same shape as the company’s initial Dominator DIMMs. This packaging is similar to Corsair’s existing Dominator Platinum RGB series modules, with the only difference being the imagery of the company’s new White Edition DIMMs, which match the packages contents.

The kit we have is Corsair’s 32GB 4x8GB offering, which runs at speeds of 3600MHz, making it a lot faster than standard DDR4 memory modules.

As usual, Corsair’s Dominator Platinum Modules are well protected, utilising the same packaging that the series is known for, with each module being encased in a plastic covering and inserted into a black foam surround. Even the most careless of couriers would be unable to damage these DDR4 modules in transit; unless they were trying of course.

Looking closer at each module, we see a subtle Corsair Dominator logo that sits on the surface of the DIMM, with side plates that are forged from anodised aluminium and provides users with its White Edition aesthetic.

The Top bar of Corsair’s Dimonator Platinum modules is also white, this time being die-cast from Zinc Alloy and made white using a microarc oxidation process, The white of the side plates and top bars are surprisingly similar, given the different methods that Corsair used when manufacturing them. The DIMM’s top bar can be removed using a set of Allen keys, just like Corsair’s previous Dominator Platinum offerings.

These DIMMs are not all white, and feature gold-coloured accents thanks to the module’s Allen bolts and lighting diffusion grid. This gives some extra depth to these modules, and are subtle enough to not take away from the mostly white aesthetic of these modules.

At the top of each DIMM, we can clearly see each lighting zone of the module, each of which has a Capellix LED underneath. This design is very different from Corsair’s older Dominator Platinum LED offerings, providing end users with a different final look. The word DOMINATOR is also visible from the top of the modules, making it clear that type of memory you are using.

If you have been a PC gamer for the past few years, you will be well aware of what RGB lighting can do for your system, delivering a level of customizability that was previously impossible, both in terms of versatility and available colour options.

In times gone by LED lighting was restricted to the LEDs that manufacturers offered on their products, rarely extending beyond Red, Green and Blue. What you could do with your system was limited, and any changes came at a high cost. Do you have a blue system and want to change it to red? Well, in the past that required changing every illuminated component that you had. Now all you need is some software control options and a few button clicks.

Options are what RGB LEDs offer, and Corsair’s Dominator Platinum White Edition memory delivers that, providing a pure white, a rich red and deep emerald greens. This is truly the pinnacle of Corsair’s RGB lighting accomplishments.

By default, Corsair’s iCue software allows users to set their memory up to offer lighting options such as Rainbow Wave, Spiral Rainbow, Rainbow, Colour Shift, Colour Pulse, Colour Wave, Rain, Visor, Sequential Marquee and an endless list of static colour options. These modes will be shown in our video overview.

While RGB memory will be seen as unnecessary by some, to others it will act as the finishing touch of a full RGB setup, providing the final spark that could bring your system to its next level.

ASUS fans will be glad to know that they can control Corsair’s Dominator Platinum RGB series memory kits with their existing ASUS Aura RGB lighting control setup, thanks to an iCUE plugin from Corsair. More information about how to do this is available here.
