Samsung 860 Pro 4TB SSD Review

Introduction

Solid State Drives endured a difficult birth that sparked massive debate across the internet. Anyone who ever used one new instantly that this was a proper game-changing piece of hardware, and even now after all this time we still say that the biggest upgrade you can do is to go from a mechanical drive to a Solid State. Particularly for your OS but now, in the age of ever larger games with open worlds, for your gaming library too.

The problem was one of capacity. Early SSDs came in two flavours – extremely small and quite expensive, or not very big and hugely expensive – which led to the debate about the value of sticking with the tried and true mechanical options.

Indeed system builders still largely base their specs around an OS SSD and a big old mechanical for the data storage. We’re not going to begin to pretend that today’s review – the Samsung 860 Pro in it’s enormous 4TB guise – is affordable for the majority of us, but given that it wasn’t all that long ago when a similar amount of outlay would buy you a 500GB or more recently a 1TB drive, then it clearly shows how far and fast the prices of Solid State drives has plummeted.

Technical Specifications

Naturally 4TB of V-NAND takes up a decent amount of space and so we think it will be a while before we find ourselves in possession of M.2 drives of similar capacity, but there is no doubting that a SSD on the SATA 6 Gb/s interface is still plenty fast enough for the majority of needs. With Trim support, Automatic Garbage Collection and the all-important S.M.A.R.T health service the 860 Pro has everything at its fingertips to enable you to have a long and healthy relationship with this Samsung drive.
