Expect higher framerates and better visuals with Immortals of Aveum’s Unreal Engine 5.2 upgrade

Immortals of Aveum is getting upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.2

When Immortals of Aveum launched on PC and current-gen consoles, gamers were unimpressed by the game’s visuals and its performance on all platforms. Even gamers with ultra-high-end PCs struggled to get the game running at high framerates. Console gamers were also shocked to see the game’s low resolution visuals and huge framerate fluctuations on current-generation systems.

While game updates have helped to improve Immortal’s of Aveum’s performance on all platforms, gamers remain unhappy with the current state of the game. Thankfully, Ascendant Studios has confirmed that the game is receiving a total engine overhaul. Immortals of Aveum is moving to Unreal Engine 5.2.

By moving to Unreal Engine 5.2, Ascendent Studios plans to both improve Immortals of Aveum’s visuals and performance. These changes will come to all platforms. Unreal Engine 5.2 will make major changes to both Lumen and Nanite. These changes will not only allow Ascendent Studios to make more efficient use of console and PC hardware. This won’t only allow them to deliver higher, smoother, framerates, but also deliver better visuals in the process.

Our studio’s journey continues as we update Immortals of Aveum to UE 5.2 and begin work on our next project in UE 5.3. Here’s a sneak peek into some of what we’ll be exploring with the engine upgrade:

  • Lumen – In UE 5.1, Lumen solved the indoor-to-outdoor lighting transition seamlessly, allowing four lighters to light over 15 levels, and also allowed our modelers to instantly view assets in a variety of lighting scenarios. In 5.2, we want to take that even further by improving lighting detail around characters and visual fidelity of animations.
  • Nanite – Nanite gave us unprecedented geometric fidelity, while saving our artists countless hours of setting LODs. In 5.2, we’re looking to further enhance overall game visuals as well as faster geometry calculations that can help further reduce pop in.

Players can expect to see a number of visual and performance improvements with the move to 5.2, and we’re excited to share what we learn along the way.

Ascendent Studios has confirmed that they have started work on a new game. This game will be built using Unreal Engine 5.3, which should adds new tools and optimisations that will allow the studio deliver better visuals with their next game. Aside from the game’s use of Unreal Engine 5.3, nothing is known about Ascendent Studio’s next game.

Immortals of Aveum’s upcoming Unreal Engine 5.2 update has no planned release date. Expect us to write about this engine upgrade again when it arrives.
