HTC announces a new VR headset
Ever since VR was first announced, many wondered where the technology would eventually lead, with many desiring a standalone VR ecosystem while others wanted to leverage the powers of existing PCs or mobile phones to create high-fidelity and low-cost VR devices respectively.
At Google’s I/O developer conference, HTC announced a new VR headset, which is not a sequel to the popular Vive but a “standalone” VR device that requires no external hardware or docked devices to deliver an exciting VR experience. This headset will be part of Google Daydream VR platform and come with an affordable price tag when compared to premium VR offerings.
HTC developed this headset to provide “a deeper and more immersive portable VR experience than ever before”, removing any signs of a teacher and integrating all of the required computing power within the headset itself and removing the limitations that are brought on by using a smartphone as both the device’s screen and source of compute power.
HTC says that this new device will be released later this year, though at this time no pricing information or detailed specification have been announced.
