Next-gen Ryzen/Threadripper codenames spotted – Genesis and Vermeer
AIDA 64 has just been updated to include two new processor codenames, Vermeer, the supposed successor to Matisse, and Genesis, what’s likely to become Ryzen 4th Generation Threadripper.
Vermeer is likely to be AMD’s last AM4 series processor, succeeding AMD’s AM4-based Ryzen 3rd Generation processors with Zen 3 cores and a multitude of design improvements. Genesis is likely a reference to Genesis Peak, a mountain that’s close to Castle Peak, the rumoured codename for Ryzen 3rd Generation Threadripper. Genesis Peak is also said to utilise AMD’s Zen 3 architecture on the company’s TR4 socket.
At this time it is unknown what AMD’s Zen 3 processors will bring to the table, but at this time it seems likely that the will continue to support DDR4 memory. More outlandish rumours have suggested that they will support PCIe 5.0 and a new form of SMT that delivers four threads per core. DDR5 support has also been rumoured, but this would require a CPU socket change.
AMD’s Zen 3 series of processors are due to release sometime in 2020. These processors are likely to utilise a refined 7nm manufacturing process and contain efficiency enhancements over today’s Zen 2 processors. These design changes will likely help AMD extend their single-threaded performance to new heights, while also increasing the company’s performance per watt.
