Nicehash refutes Radeon RX 6800 mining rumours – Great news for Gamers

Earlier this week, rumours were spreading that AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series would be cryptomining monsters. Reports claimed that the Radeon RX 6800’s mining with hash rates were 50% higher than Nvidia’s RTX 3090, despite the fact that Radeon’s GPU should consume much less power.

Now, Nicehash, the cryptocurrency mining service, has refuted these claims, estimating that AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 would deliver hash rates of 50-70MH/s, making the graphics card slightly better than a Radeon RX 5700 XT for cryptocurrency mining. These hash rates are less than half of what was rumoured.

Even with these reduced hash rates, Nicehash has estimated that the RX 6800 would still be profitable as a cryptocurrency mining graphics card. That said, these profits should not be high enough to make the Radeon RX 6800 an attractive investment opportunity to cryptocurrency miners.

If Nicehash’s claims are true, this is great news for AMD and PC gamers. AMD will be able to sell their products to their target market, gamers, and PC gamers will have a better chance of purchasing a Radeon RX 6000 series graphics card at retailers. While another cryptocurrency boom would be profitable for AMD, it would prevent AMD from building up mind share amongst PC gamers and alienate their target market.
